The study of flora is vital because plants and trees are a fundamental part of life on earth. The Maasai pastoralists of the Mara use many plants found in their environment as medicine, food, building material and cosmetics. The area around Saruni Wild has a very interesting selection of trees and, because it has been untouched for generations, it shows how the Mara ecosystem was before human settlements became permanent in the Mara ecosystem. With its forests of wild cedars, olive trees and different varieties of acacias, the gorges and valleys of Saruni Wild are a wonderful setting for those interested in learning how the masai can use the flora.
Here is a selection of species found at Saruni Wild and in the Mara North Conservancy.
